Representatives of Chery’s Quality Control and Vehicle Development divisions were called to the stage at this year’s Quality Olympics to receive a Gold Medal, their fifth in a row, for their contribution to the science of vehicle quality.

The Quality Olympics, as it is informally known in the automotive and engineering world, is officially called the International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC). This year’s event was held in Hyderabad in India and was attended by 5 000 delegates, both digitally and in person.

The ICQCC originated in the 1970s as a way of standardising quality rules and regulations and sharing the best practices between countries and regions.

Since its start, the ICQCC has become the de facto voice on quality standards and it is supported by organisations such as the China Association for Quality, Singapore Productivity Association, Japan Alliance for Science and Technology, and Korea Standardisation Association.

The 2021 Conference in Hyderabad was no exception and representatives from across the world, including the United States, South Korea, Japan, India and China attended talks, workshops and various presentations on cutting edge research in the field of quality.

One such research presentation was from the Quality Control team at Chery.

The presentation was themed “Reducing vehicle jitter in the development stage of new models”. It focussed on the small and often imperceptible jitter or shudder in some new vehicles, which often point to an unrefined drivetrain and which, according to Chery, is best dealt with in the design phase, rather than in the workshop.

The presentation documented Chery’s own efforts to overcome some inherent mechanical challenges that are natural in all vehicles to drive down their jitter failure rate to only 0.25%. This not only signals a very refined and well-designed drivetrain, but also ensures greatly improved driving quality in all conditions and all stages of the vehicle’s life.

Chery presented their work in this field to delegates at the ICQCC and published a technical paper, which documents their research, results and suggested improvements to the benefit of the entire industry.

“Chery has always taken the user-centred approach to improve the product and marketing experience, and constantly improves user satisfaction.

“In the 2021 China Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) report released by JD Power, the Chery Tiggo 2 Pro topped the list of Chinese mini-SUVs by an significant margin, reflecting Chery’s ultra-high quality,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

With its fifth ICQCC Gold Medal in hand, Chery will continue to focus on developing the best possible quality in its cars and SUVs.

This will no doubt help it to sustain its incredible growth across international markets as it has done this year.

Chery increased vehicle exports by 145,7% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year and thereby set a new overall record of 212 959 vehicles exported from China in a single year.
